Homeschooling vs. Public Schooling (My First Vlog)

So, you may have noticed that 2 posts this week were related to homeschooling (our preschool curriculum giveaway and yesterday's guest post on a mother's look back at her journey of homeschooling).

Remember forever ago when Jen and I asked if you had any pressing questions for us to answer on video?  Well, one reader asked about our thoughts on homeschooling.  I thought in light of our posts this week, that it might be appropriate to go ahead and answer that question in my first vlog.  (You can view the video on YouTube here.)

I'd love to hear your feedback, but as always, please be respectful with your comments.  I know that this can be a very sensitive topic and I ask that your comments are written with a loving and gracious spirit.

  1. VERY well said! Such a loving and gracious way to go about respecting and honoring others' opinions and where God leads each individual family. Love your kind heart that's always seeking to be a light to this world in what you do and say to others.

  2. Desire', you beautifully articulated the need for unity in the body of Christ...regardless of our differences. Thank you!!

We have one year left to decide what we are going to do...and we still aren't sure either. My oldest is attending a preschool a couple mornings a week, which has been really good for him (and good for Little Brother and I to have some one-on-one time). This post really reminded me that I need to be on my knees praying about this decision, but at the same time that God can bless either decision. Just like everything else in life, what is right for one family might not be right for ours. We all need to be loving and accepting of each other without judgement.

Thank you for sharing your heart (and I loved getting to see you in "real life"). :)

    1. Thanks, Jenae! I feel like either option can be done to the glory of God and that what's right could even change from year to year or even, in some cases, child to child.

I reconsidered this post about a million times before this morning. I'm much more articulate with words that can be edited! :) But I do think it's fun to get to hear what people sound like and look like in vlogs. Not sure that it's going to be a regular thing around here though. Lol! :)

  3. very well said! our two oldest are in public school (the younger two are only 3 and 1) and so far it's been a great experience. I might feel differently if we lived somewhere else, but I'm comfortable with our local schools so far. my best friend homeschools her kids, and it's been a great experience for their family. to each their own. I don't think there's one right answer, every family and situation is different.

  5. So many good points! We've done all three with my oldest (who is only 7!) Everyone's need is different, every community is different, and every child is different. It's a blessing to have so many options for schooling. Thanks so much for your grace and compassion and encouragement that we all have grace with one another.

    1. Yes! So many options! And each of them with their strengths and weaknesses. Makes making the decision tough, which is why I'm thankful that God is bigger than any of the options. :)

  7. So well said! And, I was going to make the point that Jenae made that our loving God can bless either choice! I think we sometimes agonize so much over decisions. "Where does God want me to move?" "Which job does God want me to take?" What we are often doing is failing to recognize that his mighty power will work for our good in ANY situation!

  8. Thank you for this post. I couldn't agree more. I was a public school teacher for many years before deciding to stay at home after the birth of our first child. I honestly feel there is no one answer for every family. It isn't an easy decision! I know my husband and I have spent countless hours on our knees, praying over how we will school our children.

  9. Beautiful! Thank you! i fear this debate is becoming one of the most divisive issues in the church. Love the example you just set for so many!!! yay!

Oh and "Going Public" is a fabulous read....just another shout out for it! For both homeschoolers and public schoolers alike. It gives such sage advice on all sorts of subjects even beyond the classroom!
