Using the Bible to Correct and Encourage Children: There's an App for That (Seriously!) and Some Other Helpful Resources

So yesterday's post pondered the question:  Is it okay to use Bible verses to correct my children?

This assumes that I know what the Bible has to say about their behavior.  My memory fails me on a regular basis and that failure seems to be heightened in the midst of an intense tantrum or whine-a-thon.

I was reminded by some readers and friends yesterday of a few great resources that could be VERY helpful as I both encourage and correct my children with the Word of God.  I thought I would share the list with you in case anyone's interested:

Have you heard of this before?  It's a chart that has a bunch of behaviors that Scripture addresses.  What I love about the chart is it has a "put off" verse and a "put on" verse.  The "put on" verse is included so that parents don't just stop at "The Bible says you shouldn't act this way... end of story."  Instead I should instruct the child on what the God-honoring behavior is so that they are prepared for next time.  This could also be used to encourage children when they do something right as well.  It's only $4.00 on Amazon.

When I got my Wise Words for Moms list a couple of years ago, there were a ton of behaviors that weren't applicable to my tiny kiddos (like choosing bad friends or worry).  I condensed the list down to the 7 issues I dealt with the most with my boys and made a simplified version of the chart based directly on Wise Words for Moms.  I highly recommend investing in the chart itself, but if your kids are young the one I made may be helpful as well.

There's now an app for that!  My friend, Melissa, told me yesterday that Wise Words for Moms now has an app!  For $1.99 you can download the chart right to your smartphone.  I'm excited to have the chart with me wherever I go.  :)

A reader commented yesterday about how helpful the CTB has been as she's parented with Scripture.  Jen did a review of the Child Training Bible not too long ago and what a wonderful tool it is.  There's a giveaway going on right now for a full CTB set if you share about it on facebook!  I plan to invest in this resource very soon!

We did a review of Parenting With Scripture in conjuction with the Child Training Bible review.  It's another great tool to help you when you can't think of what the Word says concerning an issue.  I've personally used it and really like it.

Do you have any recommendations to add to the list?

  1. Wow! Thank you so much for telling us about that app! Your blog has been so encouraging to me. I also highly recommend the Doorposts company- especially their book called For Instruction in Righteousness which is basically a topical Bible with verses and resources for situations that come up in parenting. All of their products are scripture based and very wonderful. I cannot explain how helpful their resources are. You'll have to go to their website to check them out for yourself.

  2. Hi - thanks for your chart Desire! I downloaded it!

So, I while back I bought the doorposts chart that is similar mentioned by Gwen (above). We still use it.
    Pros:
    1. you get to fill in the consequence
    2. there are faces/pictures depicting the offense/bad behavior for non-readers

    Cons:
    1. I think it only comes in KJV which makes some of the verses they chose a little clunky.
    2. although the doorposts chart is helpful in reminding the child about God's take on their offense, overall, it doesn't do what the Wise Words for Mom chart seeks to do which is to help the child evaluate their own behavior.

For that reason, I much prefer Wise Words for Mom - just wish it came with cute little cartoon faces for my non-readers! ;)
